Explore one of Costa Rica’s greatest treasures, Corcovado National Park, and experience the last remaining lowland tropical rainforest on the Pacific Coast. This unforgettable full-day excursion takes you into both pristine primary and secondary growth rainforests. You’ll be immersed in the unparalleled beauty of this verdant, complex, and fragile ecosystem that harbors 2.5% of the planet’s biodiversity.
We meet in the Great Room at 5:45 for breakfast, then it’s down to the dock to board our boat. The 35-minute boat ride along the west coast of the Osa Peninsula is its own mini-adventure. We sometimes see rays, sea turtles, dolphins, and even flying fish. We do a wet landing on the beach (our boats back in and drop you a few feet from the shore), and then a quick check in at the San Pedrillo ranger station, the starting point for our rainforest adventure.
Aguila’s bilingual guide leads you into the jungle, helping you spot the incredible diversity of flora and fauna along the several clearly marked trails. Some trails are a little more strenuous than others to navigate. Your guide will decide on which trails to take.
Be sure to bring your binoculars and camera for this adventure, which includes rivers and waterfalls, stretches of golden beaches, and opportunities to spot a myriad of tropical birds, amphibians, reptiles, primates, and other mammals during the hike.
The Park supports all four species of primates found in Costa Rica — white-faced Capuchins, Spider and Squirrel monkeys (Titis), and Howler monkeys. The deep-throated roar of the howler echoes throughout the forest, and is not only the world’s loudest monkey, but one of the loudest land mammals on earth. You may also see white-lipped peccaries, (wild pigs), coatis, agoutis, snakes, and countless bird species, including the vibrant scarlet macaws and trogons. There are 4000+ types of plants, 500+ species of trees, and if you’re lucky, you just might even catch a glimpse of the elusive puma up in the trees, a truly breathtaking sight.
Depending on the weather, your guide will determine whether to lead you to the beautiful San Pedrillo Waterfall. Please know that the hike to the falls can be a bit challenging, as there are streams to cross, and the trails can be slippery. At the falls, you can relax, enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool water of the natural pool at its base. It’s a great chance to capture stunning photos of this picturesque area.
After the waterfall, you’ll return to the ranger station to catch the boat back to the hotel for lunch. Again, from the boat, you may get lucky and catch a glimpse of humpback whales cruising by with their calves or see dolphins leaping or riding the waves behind the boat. It makes for an unforgettable day on the Osa!

What to Bring
- Hiking shoes, sneakers, or any closed shoes are mandatory for the hike for safety reasons. Strap sandals or water shoes are necessary for the arrival for the wet landing at the park.
- Lightweight shirt, shorts, or pants.
- Hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight waterproof jacket are most likely during the green season (July through December).
- Sunblock, bug spray, especially for those more susceptible to insect bites. It’s a jungle out there.
- Camera and binoculars. If you don’t have binoculars, we rent them. Ask our staff member or your guide before leaving the hotel.
- Reuseable water bottles only! The National Park does not allow single use plastic bottles or food into the park.
