Corcovado National Park
Sirena Station Tour
This trip is well worth it for those who are interested in exploring the Park’s interior, where the most abundant wildlife dwells.
Sirena Station lies at the southern tip of Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Park, renowned for its biodiversity. The park hosts 2.5% of the world’s plant and animal species and is the only perk in Costa Rica where all four primate species—howler, spider, white-faced capuchin, and squirrel monkeys, can be seen. Visitors have an excellent chance of seeing Baird’s Tapir, the largest tropical mammal found in Mexico, Central America, and northwestern South America.
This full-day adventure begins at 5:30 AM with a light breakfast. There, you’ll meet Aguila’s certified bilingual guide who will explain what to expect on the trip. Then it’s down to our dock for an amazing boat ride to Sirena Station, a fantastic trip down the west coast of the Osa Peninsula. The boat takes about an hour depending on sea conditions. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of untouched lowland tropical rainforest, a sight worth the journey itself. And often, there’s a mix of sea life that may include dolphins, whales, sea turtles, rays, and even flying fish.
Reaching the Sirena drop-off point, the boat will turn and back up to the beach for a wet landing. It’s best to wear sandals with straps for this part. Once ashore, you can change into your hiking footwear to prepare for the trails ahead.
We’ll check in with the ranger at the station to confirm our group’s reservation. The rangers will inspect everyone’s backpack for single-use plastics (e.g., plastic water bottles) and any food items, neither of which can be brought into the park. Your guide will decide which among the several trails will be best on that day. While Sirena trails are mostly flat, you may need to forge some streams.
Considered one of the most intensely biodiverse places in the world, Corcovado has an abundance of wildlife. The guides are experts in spotting and explaining flora and fauna. In addition to monkeys, there are wild pigs, sloths, anteaters, snakes, American crocodiles, caymans, and, if you are very lucky, you may catch a glimpse of one of the Park’s two big cats — the Puma and the Jaguar. Both are nocturnal hunters, but we have seen them in the daytime on rare occasions. The American crocodile, Jaguar, giant anteater, and tapir are among the Park’s five most endangered species.
The Osa, and the Park in particular, is a paradise for bird watching. The range of species is mind-boggling and includes Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, Great Tinamou, Manakins, the Crested Owl, and two species of birds endemic to Corcovado — the Yellow-Bill Cotinga and the Black-Cheeked Ant-Tanager. Let’s not forget the namesake of our hotel, the eagle of the Osa… the Harpy Eagle, the most powerful raptor in the Americas. Sightings are rare as it is also an endangered species in the park. But they’ve been reported.
Corcovado boasts over 500 tree species, making up nearly 40% of all tree species found in Costa Rica. Among them, towering hardwood trees, rare tropical trees, and various endemic plants. Sirena is a special destination and a somewhat different experience from Pedrillo, the northern ranger station and starting point for our other Corcovado tour.
After a few different hikes, you’ll enjoy a traditional lunch at the park ranger station, have a bit of a rest, and then head back to the hotel in the early afternoon. On the way back, the marine show continues. Depending on the season, you might see Humpback whales with their calves, or any one of the five species of dolphins that inhabit these waters. The are extremely playful and sometimes cruise in the wake of the boat or ride the bow wake jumping in front of the boat. Makes for a magical way to end your day enjoying Corcovado.
